Cala Violina

Cala Violina lies on the coast between Scarlino and Punta Ala, about 20 km north-west of our flats in Via di Mezzo 2. From the village, follow the SP 158 ‘delle Collacchie’ road in the direction of Follonica for half an hour’s drive. Leaving the sea to your left and the pine trees behind, you will reach the Val Martina car park from where the footpath leading to the beach begins.

One of the most iconic coves in the Maremma, Cala Violina is famous for the musical rustle that the quartz sand emits under footsteps. Enclosed in a crescent of Mediterranean maquis, it offers:

  • Turquoise water and shallow waters, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
  • Unspoilt landscape: no establishments, just a small seasonal kiosk away from the foreshore.
  • Restricted access (1 June – 30 September) to 700 persons/day ⇒ preserved environment and tranquillity even in high season.
  • Coastal paths lead to the wilder Cala Civette in an extra 15′ walk.

What to bring

  • Lightweight backpack with 2 l water, snacks and rubbish bag.
  • Mask & snorkel to observe posidonia and shoals of bream.
  • Hat, sun cream, towel & parasol (no rental on site).

  • Photo-trek at sunset: the grazing light enhances the contrasts between white sand, green bush and cobalt blue sea; perfect for nature photography.
  • Walk to Cala Civette: a 15-minute coastal path takes you to an even more secluded cove, ideal for those seeking absolute silence.
  • Picnic in the shade of the junipers: there are no establishments or services, but the kiosk at the entrance to the trail offers sandwiches, fresh fruit and drinks to enjoy on the beach.
