Monte Amiata towers 90 km northeast of our flats in Via di Mezzo 2. In about 1 h 40′ by car, you go from the sea to the high-altitude woods: follow the SP 158 to Grosseto, take the SS 223 towards Siena, exit at Paganico and continue on the SP 64/SS 323 towards Arcidosso-Vetta Amiata to the Rifugio Cantore, the starting point of the main trails.
A former volcano 1 738 m high, Monte Amiata dominates the entire Tuscan coastline: in summer it offers cool, centuries-old beech forests, while in winter it transforms into a small ski resort with 10 km of slopes and cross-country trails.
Not to be missed
- Rifugio Cantore – starting point of the Anello della Vetta (5.2 km, +250 m difference in altitude, suitable for families).
- Summit cross – 360° panorama: from Lake Trasimeno to the Argentario and the peaks of the Apennines.
- Educational charcoal kilns along the trail, testimony to the ancient trade of the “charcoal burners”.
- Chestnut and porcini woods: regulated harvesting in autumn (daily permit).
Recommended experiences
- Trekking & MTB among larches and lava stones in spring/summer.
- Snowshoe or ski hire on the Canalgrande slope (ideal for beginners) in winter.
- Gastro-tip at the refuge: mushroom soup, polenta with wild boar and chestnut-flavoured “Amiatino” chocolate.
- Post-trek relaxation at the free thermal baths of Bagni San Filippo: the “White Whale” is a 40 °C limestone waterfall.

Photos and drones allowed outside the protected wildlife area (please respect the signs).
Temperatures: above 1 500 m it can drop below 18 °C even in August → bring a light jacket.
Free parking at Rifugio Cantore; toilets and bar open all year round (reduced opening hours in low season).
