Vetulonia rises on the first hills northeast of Castiglione della Pescaia: from our apartments in Via di Mezzo 2 it can be reached in about 30 km by following SP 152 toward Buriano and continuing through other scenic hills. In less than 35 minutes by car you go from the sea to the hilly landscape that is home to the Etruscan necropolis and museum village.
An ancient Etruscan city of legendary riches, Vetulonia is the place where, according to the historian Silio Italico, the lictor fasces later adopted by Rome were forged. Today, it offers a unique journey among monumental tumuli, rock-cut necropolises and orientalising orients that tell of the opulence of this polis from the 8th-6th centuries BC.
