The Diaccia Botrona extends immediately to the east of the historic centre of Castiglione della Pescaia: from our flats in Via di Mezzo 2 it takes just over 2 km (5 min by car, 15 min by bike) to pass from the medieval walls to the footbridges of the reserve. Past the bridge over the Bruna river and the Casa Rossa Ximenes – visible from the highest terraces of the village – you enter the ancient basin of Lake Prile, now a protected wetland area occupying the plain between Castiglione and Grosseto.
The last mirror of the ancient Lake Prile, Diaccia Botrona is now one of the most important wetlands in Europe and is a Ramsar site of value. Over 300 species of birds – from pink flamingos to marsh harriers – winter here in a landscape that alternates between reed thickets, freshwater lakes and brackish lagoon patches.
What to see and do
- Casa Rossa Ximenes: an ancient Lorraine artefact with a multimedia trail on the land reclamation.
- Electric boat (1 h): silent navigation between canals for guided bird-watching.
- Panorama Trail (4 km A/R): walkways and photo huts also suitable for children.
In summer, night-time outings with red torches and a fun treasure hunt “Little Birdwatchers” are organised.
Tips
At dawn, the marsh is tinged with pink, perfect for signature shots; at dusk, the songs of the waders provide the soundtrack for romantic walks. Bring binoculars, repellent and closed shoes: the ground can be muddy. If travelling light, buy 0 km honey and jams locally – a concrete way to support the reserve’s circular economy.
