Tirli rises 580 metres above sea level on the wooded ridge that embraces Castiglione della Pescaia. From our headquarters in Via di Mezzo 2 it takes about 20 km by scenic road (25 minutes by car): you leave the village to the south-east, take the SP 60 “Castiglionese” road, then the SP 152, and in a few bends through chestnut trees and glimpses of the sea you reach the car park at the entrance to the village.
Perched on the ridge overlooking the coast, Tirli offers sweeping views of Diaccia Botrona, the Colline Metallifere and, on clear days, as far as the island of Elba. The village grew up around the Church of Sant’Andrea (1669): the interior houses a 17th-century organ, the protagonist of summer concerts and autumn festivals.

- Hermitage of Sant’Anna
An easy path leads to this oratory surrounded by a centuries-old chestnut grove. Next to it is a spring dedicated to the saint: tradition has it that her water brings good luck to couples seeking a child. - Belvedere “Il Fontanino”
An obligatory stop before returning: the view sweeps from Argentario to Punta Ala.
Typical flavours
Tirli is the Maremma game capital. In family-run restaurants taste:
- Pappardelle with wild boar
- Stewed boar with black olives
- Porcini mushrooms trifolati on polenta crostoni
Pair with a Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC or a Rosso di Sovana.
Trekking & MTB among chestnut trees and panoramas
The area is criss-crossed by MTB and hiking trails that connect Tirli to the Rocca di Scarlino and Poggio Ballone. In autumn, the forests are tinged with orange: with a day permit, you can collect chestnuts and porcini mushrooms.
Tips
Events: wild boar festival in mid-October; Christmas market with undergrowth products.
Climate: in July-August, due to the altitude, the temperature is 4-5 °C cooler than on the coast.
Access: paved panoramic road (20 km, 25 minutes from San Simone). Free parking at the entrance of the village.
